CITY OF NEW HAVEN PARTNERS WITH YALE AND NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSING SERVICES TO BUILD HOUSE IN NEWHALLVILLE

(New Haven, CT) New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. was joined by Yale University President Richard Levin and Jim Paley, Executive Director of Neighborhood Housing Services, to announce a partnership that will allow a house to be built at 32 Lilac Street in the City’s Newhallville neighborhood. Mayor DeStefano announced that the City and the University will split the $125,000 needed to finish construction on the single family home.

“There are so many extremely active, dedicated residents in Newhallville working hard everyday to improve the community and we are committed to working with them,” said Mayor DeStefano. The Mayor noted that residents have undertaken numerous community improvement initiatives including working with to install brighter, but more energy efficient, street lighting and establishing neighborhood standards that have a strong emphasis on curb appeal. “In fact, Newhallville boasts the most active community gardening program in New Haven and is working to build a community greenhouse,” noted the Mayor.

The house will be built by Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven, a not-for-profit. Construction is planned to begin within a month and should take approximately four months to complete. The house will be single family “workforce” housing for individuals with incomes that are up to 80 percent of the area’s median income.
